Why Make Your Own Cat Ears?
Store-bought cat ears are widely available, but crafting your own gives you full control over color, size, shape, and materials — which matters a lot when you're cosplaying a specific character. Homemade ears can also be far sturdier and more detailed than mass-produced alternatives, and the process itself is genuinely enjoyable.
This guide covers two methods: a quick felt-and-headband approach for beginners, and a foam-and-fur method for a more polished result.
Method 1: Felt Cat Ears (Beginner-Friendly)
What You'll Need
- Craft felt in your chosen color(s)
- A plain plastic or metal headband
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Optional: wire (to help ears hold their shape)
- Optional: a contrasting color of felt for the inner ear
Steps
- Cut your ear shapes. Draw two triangle shapes on felt — roughly 8–10 cm tall and 7 cm wide at the base. Cut two slightly smaller triangles in a contrasting color for the inner ear detail.
- Layer the pieces. Glue the smaller inner triangle onto the larger outer triangle, centered and leaving space around the edges.
- Add structure (optional). Cut a piece of wire slightly smaller than your ear shape, fold it into a triangle, and glue it inside the ear between two layers of felt for rigidity.
- Attach to the headband. Pinch the base of each ear slightly (this gives a more natural shape) and hot glue them firmly to the headband. Hold for 30 seconds while the glue sets.
- Finishing touches. Add any embellishments — small gems, paint details, or fur trim — before the glue fully cures.
Method 2: Foam and Faux Fur Ears (Intermediate)
What You'll Need
- EVA foam (2–4mm thickness)
- Faux fur fabric in your character's color
- Fabric glue or hot glue
- Sharp scissors or a craft knife
- Headband with a flat top, or hair clips
- Heat gun (optional, for shaping foam)
Steps
- Cut the foam base. Cut two ear shapes from EVA foam. These will be the inner structure — make them slightly smaller than the final size you want.
- Shape with heat (optional). Use a heat gun to gently warm and curve the foam for a more three-dimensional look.
- Cut the fur. Cut faux fur pieces slightly larger than your foam shapes. Remember to cut from the back of the fabric to avoid cutting the pile.
- Wrap and glue. Wrap the fur around the foam, pulling it snug and gluing the excess to the back. Trim neatly.
- Add inner ear detail. Cut a small piece of felt or thin foam in a contrasting color and glue it to the front of the ear.
- Mount to headband or clips. Use strong glue or small stitches to attach the finished ears to your headband or hair clips.
Tips for a Professional Finish
- Always let glue fully dry before wearing — especially if you're using hot glue on foam.
- Match your ear color to a wig if you're wearing one for full character accuracy.
- For outdoor conventions, seal felt ears with a light spray of fabric sealant to protect against humidity.
- If your ears keep flopping, add a small bead of hot glue along the base seam for extra rigidity.
Choosing the Right Style for Your Character
Different nekomimi characters have very distinct ear designs. Koneko's ears are small and dark; a character like Blair from Soul Eater has large, dramatic ears with a witch hat combo. Study reference images of your character and adjust the size, angle, and color scheme accordingly. The ears are often the most recognizable part of a cat girl cosplay, so getting them right makes a huge difference.
